How to Unlock Save File Stars
Star #1
Defeat Bowser in the second castle of World 8.
Star #2
Clear every stage in Worlds 1-8.
Star #3
Defeat Bowser in his castle in special world 8. Then, defeat bowser in the second castle of World 8 again.

Collect all 285 non-Mystery Box Star Coins.
Star #5
Get the Golden Flagpole at the end of every stage, and clear all stages with Mario and Luigi.
