Twilight Town
You'll arrive directly in Twilight Town from the brown pipe. As soon as you get in you'll be greeted by a resident named Gloomer who warns you that scary things have been going on. You'll then hear a bell toll and that resident will turn into a pig. Mayor Dour will then show up and take you to his home.
The mayor explains that the town has been cursed. A dark creature who lives at the Creepy Steeple is turning residents into pigs whenever the bell tolls. He also suggests that the Crystal Star may be found in the Creepy Steeple. Before investigating that further, there are a few things to pick up around town. You can check to the left of the mayor's house to find Star Piece #59.
Head south and whack one of the bushes to the left of the tree in town to find Star Piece #60. Head right into the next area of town. Enter the first house you see and you'll find a mother who needs food to feed her children. You can trade her any sort of food item for a Shooting Star. She will then promptly be turned into a pig.
Head to the right and check behind the barrels near the tree to find Star Piece #61. Enter the shop and speak to the woman inside. Her husband has been turned into a pig, and she offers anything from the store room that might help turn him back. Unfortunately it is locked, and she says that they key must be somewhere in the woods. You can check behind the sign in the store to find an Inn Coupon before leaving.
If you try to leave town to the east, a guard will stop you until you go get the mayor's permission. Head back to the mayor's house to find that he too has been turned into a pig. Head back to the guard at the gate and you'll see that he has also been turned into a pig. That's unfortunate for him, but it means that you can now freely exit the town through the gate.
Twilight Trail
You'll immediately see a shed with a rock blocking the entrance (there is no rock in the GameCube version). Mario can simply push the rock out of the way from the right side. Inside the shed you'll find a Black Key. You can also jump up to find a coin block. This is not the key we need for the store room, so keep going along the trail.
In the next area there are new enemies called Hyper Goomba, so make sure to Tattle them. They have the ability to charge and get a huge attack boost, so take them out quickly. You can get various items from the blocks in this area, including by finding the hidden block above the ? block. Continue to the right when you've defeated the enemies and collected the items in this area.
In the next section you'll find a fallen tree blocking your path. On the other side of the log you can see the Shop Key that you can nab using Koops's shell attack. You can also grab Star Piece #62 behind the log in the same way. Make your way back to Twilight Town.
Visit the shop and open the store room with the Shop Key. Inside you can find a Jammin' Jelly, a Boo's Sheet, a Life Mushroom, and a Defend Plus badge from the chest. You'll also find a large black chest inside. As might you might predict, this is another curse chest. It allows you to transform into tube mode, which lets you roll under certain obstacles and through narrow openings.
Head back out of town east onto Twilight Trail. Make your way back to the fallen tree and you can now use tube mode to roll right under it. There is a large tree here that you can blow away using Flurrie's gust ability. This will reveal a green pipe that takes you into the background. Check behind this pipe to find Star Piece #63. Enter the pipe and walk left to get to the next section of the woods.
This is a darker section of the woods and there are more enemies here. There is a small break in the grass that you can slip through using paper mode. You can get an Earth Quake from the item block after doing so. You may encounter an Amazy Dayzee in this area. It has an HP and Attack of 20, and is immune to some statuses, so if you see one it's best to just run. Continue left to the next section.
Here you'll find a block that contains the Hammer Throw badge. Head to the left and you'll be blocked by a large tree. Use Flurrie's gust to blow it away and head through the opening into the background to get to the next section of woods.
A rock will block your path here, but you'll notice a loose paper section lying on the ground. Blow it away with Flurrie and ground pound the wood to enter a hole in the background. You can then push the rock in the background to the right to also move the rock in the foreground. Continue to the right and when you walk behind the tree jump up to find Shine Sprite #16 in a block. Continue right to the next area.
Creepy Steeple
You'll find yourself just outside the Creepy Steeple. Ground pound the wood panel over the well to enter it. Once inside, take out the new Buzzy Beetle enemy. You can also pick up Shine Sprite #17 to the left.
In the next room you'll find a bunch of Buzzy Beetles as well as a block containing the Tornado Jump badge. You can defeat the Buzzy Beetles here if you want, but it's not required. Use the spring to exit the well. You can then use tube mode to get under the right side of the fence. Check behind the fence on the left to find Star Piece #64.
You can then enter the main entrance to Creepy Steeple. Once inside you can use tube mode to enter the small opening to the north to find a treasure room. Inside you'll find a Cookbook, the Ice Smash badge, and Shine Sprite #18. In the back left corner behind the barrel you can also find Star Piece #65.
Back in the main hallway, walk to the right and you'll be stopped by a lonely Boo who says his friends have been taken away. Keep heading right and you'll find a star statue that you can push to the right, which reveals a hole taking you to sublevel two.
Once down below you can blow away the loose paper on the wall behind you with Flurrie's gust. Enter the secret hallway to the right to find a chest containing the Flower Saver badge.
Head back to the left and go through the door. Open the chest here and a ton of Boos will be released from it. One of the Boos will ask you how many just came out of the chest, and you can answer "200" to get an Ultra Shroom. The door to the left is locked, so head back right instead and use the spring to get back to the main floor.
Speak to the Boo and he will summon all his friends that you released. They will begin swarming around you, and if given enough time they will trap you and throw you outside. Run away by going through the door to the north. In this outside corridor there are some Swoopers and Boos to battle. You can slip through the fence and head right to find a large tree. Whack it with your hammer to get a Golden Leaf. Ignore the red switch for now and then go through the closest door.
This room contains a moving staircase that is controlled by the red switches. You can ground pound on the right side of the room to find Star Piece #66 in a floor panel. If you exit the room to the south, you'll see another corridor. The red switch here moves the staircase to the south while the other moves it to the north. Move the staircase all the way to the south. Head up the staircase and go through the door. Head all the way to the left, jumping over any gaps in the floor. At the end you can use Koops's shell to grab the Steeple Key.
Head back to the north corridor and hit the red switch twice so that the staircase moves all the way to the north. Head up it and run across the path all the way to the locked door. Unlock it with the Steeple Key. Inside you'll find a spiral staircase as well as a heart block and save block. Use them if you need and then head up the staircase.
When you take the spring pad to the top of the bell tower, you'll find a ghost in a party hat. This is the monster that is turning the villagers into pigs. You'll need to fight it, though it doesn't seem to have a name, only "?????". It has 40 HP and 4 Attack, but no defense.
Once you've lowered it's initial HP, it will transform into a shadow version of Mario and get more HP. After defeating this monster, you will seemingly get a Crystal Star. However, when the battle ends you'll find that rather than turn into Shadow Mario, the monster transformed you into Shadow Mario and switched places with you. You'll now be in control of Shadow Mario and the fake Mario has your partners.
Shadow Mario
Exit the Creepy Steeple and a cutscene will play with the Shadow Sirens planning to use a Superbombomb, but Vivian is accused of misplacing it. Continue through the woods back to Twilight Town keeping in mind that any battles you are in will have to be without your partners.
Just outside of town you'll run into the monster who has taken your name and body. He gives you a chance to get it back by guessing his name, but even if you know it you are missing a key letter to be able to tell it to him. A battle will then start, but there is no way to do any damage, so just run away and go back to Twilight Town.
Once back in town you'll find that the citizens have been restored and are no longer pigs. However, the guy pretending to be you is getting all the credit. Go to the west part of town and you'll see Vivian looking for the bomb. Whack the left-most clump of grass with you hammer and you'll find the Superbombomb.
Return the bomb to Vivian and she will decide to join you to help get your identity back. You'll get to practice her ability, which is to pull Mario into the shadows so that they can both hide from enemies. She suggests that we use this power to eavesdrop on the birds, who might have some useful info.
You can now listen to all the crows in the trees around town by hiding in the shadows nearby. Most of them just have random very human conversations, many of which are quite amusing. But the birds in the southeast part of town will mention that the only person who knows the monster's name is hiding under Creepy Steeple.
Head back towards Creepy Steeple but you'll get stopped by imposter Mario once again. Choose to escape to get past him. Continue backtracking all the way to Creepy Steeple, and enter the well once again. Once inside head to the room to the right and push the grate up the incline. Once you push it up enough, have Vivian pull you into the shadows so that the grate passes back over you. This lets you reach a new area through the door.
The next room contains a save block and Shine Sprite #19. You can then use tube mode to roll to the right. Ground pound through the wooden plank in the next little room. You'll fall into the background of a previous room, behind some windows. Head all the way to the right to find Star Piece #67.
Head to the left and use tube mode to roll through the small opening. You can hide in the shadows to eavesdrop on the parrot in here. It will reveal the name of the monster: Doopliss. There are several chests inside this room. Open them all to get a Mr. Softener, the Power Plus badge, a Steeple Key, and The Letter "p".
Before leaving the room, you can also ground pound near the bottom right of the room to find Star Piece #68. In the next room you can unlock the door to connect back to the main area of the Creepy Steeple. However, you can also smash the large yellow block with your super hammer to reveal a pipe that takes you right back to Twilight Town.
Doopliss
Head back out of town to the right to summon imposter Mario once again. This time around you'll be able to enter the name "Doopliss" (case sensitive). This time, Doopliss will be the one running away. You'll need to chase him back to the bell tower at the top of Creepy Steeple. Remember, you now have a pipe in Twilight Town that will serve as a shortcut to get there.
When you reach the bell tower it will be revealed to Vivian that you are Mario, so she no longer wants to help you. However, she'll come back around after a couple turns of battle. In this battle, you'll have to fight against your clone and all of your partners, starting with Goombella. It's a straightforward battle, Doopliss has 40 HP and will use Mario's normal attacks as will your partners. Make sure to use Vivian's Shade First to get extra burn damage.
After you defeat Doopliss, your partners will discover that they have been duped and will apologize for attacking you. Vivian will also join your party permanently. You'll also get this chapter's Crystal Star. This increases your Star Power and lets you use the spepcial move "Art Attack".
Peach
You'll get another glimpse into the X-Naut hideout where Grodus is once again talking about world domination. You'll then be back playing as Princess Peach who is asked to perform a quiz for TEC. Here are the answers to the questions:
Q: "What will happen if you collect seven Crystal Stars?"
A: "Thousand Year Door opens."
Q: "What is the goal of Grodus, leader of the X-Nauts?"
A: "To conquer the world."
Q: "What is the legendary treasure that waits behind the Thousand-Year Door?"
A: "A 1,000-year-old demon's soul."
Q: "What does Sir Grodus wish to do with this ancient demon's soul?"
A: "Bring the demon back to life."
Q: "What is required to seal up the demon again?"
A: "Crystal Stars."
This quiz appears to be a sneaky way of TEC giving Princess Peach (and therefore Mario) information and a warning about Grodus's plans. Peach will then send an email to Mario where she shares this information.
Bowser
You'll be back as Bowser with Kamek who are both once again a little behind on the Crystal Star information. They want to travel to Glitzville, despite already seeing Mario there last chapter. Bowser will attempt to take his Clown Car to Glitzville, but will fall in the ocean instead. You'll then get to play an underwater 2D platformer level as Bowser. After the level though, Bowser just ends up back in Rogueport.
The Thousand Year Door
When you leave Twilight Town via Rogueport Sewers you'll get that email from Peach. There's not as much to collect at the end of this chapter, so we can head straight for the Thousand Year Door room on sublevel three while we're down here. Upon presenting your Crystal Star the next location will be highlighted on your map. It looks to be some sort of pirate island.
You'll then be taken to the Professor's house who fills you in on some more research he's been doing. Apparently the aptly named Thousand Year Door can only seal this demon away for a thousand years, and we happen to be on the thousandth year. He suggests that your map is pointing to Keelhaul Key and that you might find out more information at the harbor.
Rogueport Collectibles
There are a few goodies we can pick up with our new ability and partner. While we are here though, you should pay a visit to Merlon to power up Vivian. Now get on the roofs of East Rogueport by using Yoshi's flutter jump south of the bridge. You'll see a chimney up here that you can use your tube mode ability to roll into. This is Admiral Bobbery's house. Enter the room behind him to find a block containing Shine Sprite #20.
Pay a visit to the warp pipe room in the sewers to unlock the next warp pipe to Twilight Town. Exit this room to the right and you'll find a grate you can slip through and enter a room. This is the room with spikes rising from the floors that we couldn't do anything with earlier. Now that you have Vivian, you can hide in the shadows to avoid the spikes and navigate the room. At the end you can find the Spike Shield badge in the chest.
Head to West Rogueport and enter the first house you see. Go up the stairs and you'll see a small opening to the right. Use tube mode to roll through it and enter a back alley. Here you'll find a block containing Shine Sprite #21. You can then use the nearby openining to exit into an adjacent house.
Ms. Mowz and the Trouble Center
The following trouble center quest is perhaps the most important: it rewards you with a new partner! If you are going to do any of them, this would be the one to do.
Elusive Badge
This quest is posted by an anonymous ??? and asks you to meet them on the roof of Zess T.'s house. You can access this room via the second floor of the Inn. Speak to Ms. Mowz up here and she'll ask you to find a hidden badge in Hooktail's lair. Use the warp pipe room to get to Petalburg and then make your way west back to Hooktail's Castle.
Make your way to the grand staircase room and then take the elevator block up. Continue climbing the staircases and head right when you get to a fork in the green elevator block room. Follow this path all the way to the spiral staircase and then into Hooktail's lair. Once you are here, you'll want to stand just to the right of the center pillar in the room, where the shadow cast by the pillar to the left of it ends. Use Flurrie's gust to the left here to reveal a chest. Inside is the Elusive Badge.
Make your way all the way back to Rogueport and return the badge to Ms. Mowz on Zess T.'s roof. As it turns out, Ms. Mowz hid the badge to see if you could find it. Since you do, she'll reward you with the Attack FX B badge and want to join your party. Her ability outside of battle is to sniff out treasure.
Seeking Legendary Book
Zess T. is looking for a legendary cookbook hidden in a dangerous area. Visit her house in central Rogueport for more details. She tells you it's hidden somewhere in Creepy Steeple. Luckily, if you've been following the walkthrough, you will have already found this book. If not, return to Creepy Steeple and use tube mode in the first room to find a secret entrance to a treasure room. Inside is a chest containing the Cookbook and several other rewards.
Return to Zess T. and give her the book. As a reward you will get a Honey Mushroom and more importantly Zess T. will now be able to combine two ingredients while cooking to create better items.
Admiral Bobbery
If you decided to do the above quest to get Ms. Mowz, make sure to pay a visit to Merlon to power her up while you are in town. You can then head to the Inn to progress the story. If you haven't already, you can catch up with Luigi here. Speak to Flavio at the table to the right and he'll tell you about a quest for pirate treasure. Luckily for us, it appears that this treasure is at Keelhaul Key, exactly where we need to go.
Flavio wants you to meet him at the harbor to get started. When you get to the docks you'll see an elegant ship, the S.S. Flavion, but the crew is missing a navigator. One crewmate suggests that we recruit Admiral Bobbery, and it's our job to go find him.
Head to East Rogueport and flutter jump across the gap south of the bridge to reach the rooftops on the other side. Use tube mode to enter the chimney into Admiral Bobbery's house. This is where we picked up a Shine Sprite earlier, so enter the back room to grab that if you haven't already. Speak to the Admiral and tell him your plans. Unfortunately, he refuses to help and has no intentions of setting sail ever again.
Return to the bar at the Inn and speak to the bartender. He'll tell you a sad story about Admiral Bobbery and his late wife. He'll also give you an Old Letter from Bobbery's wife. Return to Bobbery to deliver him the letter and prepare for a rather touching scene. Afterward, Admiral Bobbery will agree to accompany you on the journey.
On your way back to the harbor you'll get an email from Petuni asking you to play with her. If you want to make a quick trip back to the Boggly Tree to play her game, you can get a Mystic Egg as a reward. Just ask her the question "Mario likes which person the most?".
Return to the docks to find Admiral Bobbery and the rest of the crew ready to go. You'll then set sail for the dreaded Keelhaul Key. Unfortunately you'll see a quick scene revealing that the X-Naut onboard is indeed a spy. Either way, the next chapter will begin as you set off.
